Refreshing the look of any room in your home can be a simple and cost-effective task with a new coat of paint. However, to achieve professional and long-lasting results, it’s essential to follow some key tips and techniques.

Surface Preparation: The Foundation of Success

A successful paint job always begins with meticulous surface preparation. This involves tasks such as scraping off any loose or peeling paint, sanding to remove imperfections and create a smooth surface, and patching and filling all holes, cracks, dents, and irregularities on the wall. A smooth and repaired surface ensures better paint adhesion and a more even final finish.

The Importance of Primer:

In situations where the wall has issues like tough stains, drastic color changes, or porous surfaces, it is highly recommended to apply a coat of primer or sealer before painting. Primer creates a uniform base, improves paint adhesion, seals porosity, and helps block stains, ensuring a better final result and reducing paint consumption.

Painting Order: Top to Bottom

There is a fundamental rule in painting that dictates the order in which different parts of a room should be painted: always start with the ceiling, continue with the walls, and finally paint the door and window frames. This sequence prevents paint splatters from upper areas from ruining already painted surfaces.

Technique for Painting Walls:

When applying paint to walls, it’s important to work from top to bottom. It’s recommended to paint in manageable sections, approximately 60x60 centimeters. This technique allows for a more even distribution of paint across the surface, avoiding areas with gaps or excessive paint buildup. Working in sections also gives you the chance to control coverage and ensure a consistent finish throughout the wall.

Finishing Touches for Frames, Doors, and Windows:

Once the ceiling and wall paint is completely dry, it’s time to paint the door and window frames. For these smaller, detailed areas, it’s recommended to use small brushes or paintbrushes that allow greater control and precision in paint application.
